true. It really is something that people have to seek out. It is not like one day someone walks up to the person in the mailroom and says ok we have decided you will be a manager.

There are also plenty of dinks in the trenches. But being in a position of power highlights one’s dinkiness even more.

Because most people aren’t used to doing work. They’re used to making it *look like* they’re doing work, because people reward you for work that they see you doing. They have zero concept of a bigger picture other than figuring out how to do less work. Have you noticed that whenever co-workers complain about something or address a perceived problem, their solution involves them doing less work? > Why does the executives treat people like dirt? I guess I just don’t like to be bothered by people. Like at work why do people get their panties in a wad over the stupidest things? Why can’t people at work just ask directly for what they want? Why do people have to be so jealous of others. It is obvious that through those fakey work smiles people are jealous of each other. Why can’t people just do their fucking job and do a good job at it instead of playing pass the buck? I think it is easier to do a good job in a timely manner than to fuck around with it. Why does the executives treat people like dirt? This one guy only talks to his fellow cronies and he ignores most other employees.

I don’t understand this one, I’ve had a guy bitch at me to no end because I rebuilt his hard drive that died on him, and, while I set everything up nearly identical to the way he had it….I had the nerve to forget his custom new mail sound file (heaven forbid!). I’ve had an entire department at work bitch at me for a week because I added (at the boss’ request) the company logo to all outbound email messages. > Why does the executives treat people like dirt? All of the other ones that you listed bother me too, but this one especially pisses me off. I see one executive almost every morning as we walk into the building and I say hello every time (as I do to everyone else that I walk in with) and this guy NEVER says hi in return (just smiles and keeps walking). Its a small enough company that everyone knows each other but apparently some people don’t "deserve" to be acknowledged by him. (Actually he occasionally says hi, but only after I stopped for a while — I don’t know if thats coincidence or not, but its interesting)

office situations make me mad in the head. i leave for the day feeling as if i’d like to rip everyone’s head off and replace it with a turd since that’s how useful they are to me for the most part. like, the bit where i have to say the same goddam thing to each person 3 times because they’re braindead nitwits. the part where everyone wants an explanation for everything and they don’t realize that i’ve been over this 20 times already today. the pettiness and the politics and the bickering and backbiting. i just can’t stand it. >I had people bitch at me for leaving them out of an email. That’s why we hang around ASS > Like at work why do people get their panties in a wad over the stupidest > things?
If you experience this only at work, you’re lucky. It’s all over. Ex.: ever get flipped off on the road for the slightest thing? > Why can’t people at work just ask directly for what they want?
They probably have neither the right nor the authority to do so > Why do people have to be so jealous of others. It is obvious that > through those fakey work smiles people are jealous of each other.
Again, if you experience this only at work, you’re lucky. Look, aren’t most of the guys here jealous of those who can attract women? (though there are no fakey smiles here) > Why can’t people just do their fucking job and do a good job at it > instead of playing pass the buck? Everyone screws up. Very few accept responsibility. Especially suits. > Why does the executives treat people like dirt? This one guy only talks > to his fellow cronies and he ignores most other employees.
You would prefer then he give you a fakey work smile? Make up your mind! He’s that way because nice guys finish last – it’s true. As I have posted here before, companies are NOT meritocracies. The climb up the corporate ladder is political in nature, and all that goes with it (backstabbing, cronyism, etc). If they do speak to you, be prepared to be blatently lied to. I have experienced this first hand. Kill or be killed, eat or be eaten. Few "nice" guys hack this. There’s too much money at stake. -jww

Perfect! He hasn’t > really said anything to me now in a long time.
If it’s a power game he’s playing, it seems he plays the game well … I’d like to make a suggestion: experiment with this game of not greeting and greeting people and watch what happens. But don’t expect an immediate change in their behaviour. If you start/stop greeting, keep it up for quite a while before you change your game. You might think "No. I don’t want to play games." but it’ll be well worth the exercise if you want to understand something that I think is important about human nature. If you truly don’t want to play games, at least watch your own reactions when different people do and don’t greet you. Its fine by me, it > doesnt really bother me on a personal level, I actually find it kind > of funny. And now I’m going to seemingly contradict myself. Allen, you’ll probably scoff now, but one day (if you are lucky that is) you are going to find yourself in the exact same position as this exec. No, I’m not saying that you’re going to be a snobby exec. What I’m saying is that you might suddenly realise that you do the exact same thing to someone else as that exec has done to you. Only, when you do it you’re going to have a "good reason" for it. And this is the part that is going to decide if you’re lucky or not: suddenly you’ll realise that you may have been doing it a lot more times than you ever realised you’d done it before. And then you’ll be able to see it from both points of view and it won’t matter anymore. (HTMS – I wanted to respond, but I’m not "all here" at the mo.) – Michaela

I doubt it’s coincidence. I think he probably always noticed your presence and maybe saw you as relatively insignificant. You greeted him and reinforced his "superior" feeling. I wonder about that about people in general, not just at work. Instead of dropping hints and then feeling alienated/pissed when I prove oblivious, why not just tell me what they want directly? I’m usually accommodating, "nice guy" that I am. > Why do people have to be so jealous of others. It is obvious that > through those fakey work smiles people are jealous of each other.
I’ve (mostly) been in relatively non-hierarchal jobs, with at most one supervisor who’s in charge of a bunchof underlings. Not much room for jealousy there (although I suppose some want the super’s job). I can only imagine what sort of jealousies you get in a full-blown corporate setting. > Why can’t people just do their fucking job and do a good job at it > instead of playing pass the buck?
